“Last Wednesday, August 5th, we did the Circular Hike with our guide João. A beautiful walk along the sea, the cliffs, and the fort. João spoke with great enthusiasm about the history of Porto Covo, the flora, and the fauna, and there was plenty of time for questions. We had a fantastic morning and managed to take beautiful pictures of wonderful views. Just a small note… a brief break for a drink halfway through the hike would have been nice. We highly recommend it!”

Nowadays, the word ‘sustainability’ is everywhere. We hear it in retail, in energy, and increasingly more so in tourism. But the real question we should be asking ourselves as hikers, guides, and nature lovers is: what does it actually mean to hike sustainably?

For a long time, nature tourism was limited to a purely contemplative approach. The golden rule was simple: leave no trace. Don’t leave trash behind, stay on the trails, and don’t disturb the wildlife. That mindset was, and continues to be, essential.

As awareness grew, great concepts also emerged, such as plogging—the practice of picking up litter along the way while walking or running. These are noble and necessary actions that help clean up the trails and raise awareness about human impact. However, in our Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park, the pressure on the most sensitive ecosystems requires us to go even further. That is where the concept of regenerative tourism comes in.

The difference between reacting and regenerating

Picking up litter on the trail is an excellent response to a symptom, but regenerative tourism aims to get to the root of the matter: ensuring that the entire experience is designed so that the negative impact is zero from the very first step, and the positive impact on the region is tangible.

Hiking with a purpose involves structural choices across the entire value chain:

Respect for local community rhythms: Valuing regional producers, local businesses, and the traditions of those who live in the area year-round.

Active and continuous preservation: Designing routes that respect the carrying capacity of ecosystems, ensuring that the flow of hikers neither degrades plant life nor disturbs natural habitats.

Rigor and audited commitment: Replacing good intentions with real standards of excellence, where resource management, plastic reduction, and social responsibility are measured and certified by international entities.

A vision for the future of our coastline

The Alentejo Southwest, the Natural Park, and the Rota Vicentina are a natural heritage of immeasurable value. The way we present them to visitors defines the kind of future we are building for them.

Every good practice adds up, from the hiker who picks up a plastic bottle off the ground to the guide who raises awareness within their group. But real transformation happens when sustainability stops being a one-off gesture and becomes part of the permanent DNA of those operating on the ground.

For us at Hike Time Portugal, reaching milestones like Biosphere certification is not a finish line, but rather the validation of this philosophy: that it is possible to offer exclusive, safe, and memorable experiences while actively protecting the ecosystem and the local economy.

The future of nature tourism isn’t just about looking at the landscape or fixing past damage. It’s about taking care of it in every detail, with every partner we choose, and with every step we take.

Next time you lace up your boots to explore our coast, what kind of footprint do you want to leave behind?

Walking is much more than just putting one foot in front of the other. To me, it is a gateway to the soul of a place, to its history, and ultimately, to ourselves.

I created Hike Time Portugal to be the meeting point for those who seek excellence and the quiet authenticity of our country.

The Man Behind the Path

Before being a guide, I am someone who finds balance in nature. I am a husband and a father, and my family is my foundation. When I’m not on the trails, you’ll find me at sea-water sports are my other great passion and how I recharge my energy.

This personal connection with the elements, between land and water, is what I strive to pass on in every experience I design.

Facilitator, Trainer, and Leader

My professional journey was built in training and team leadership. This experience in leading people allows me to be more than just a guide today; I am a facilitator. I know how the rhythm of your steps, the silence of nature, and the right conversations at the right time can open new perspectives and bring a mental clarity that is rare nowadays.

With a deep knowledge of cultural storytelling, I turn every hike into a living narrative, introducing you to the myths, the people, and the details that make each place unique.

Curating Immersive Experiences.

As an expert in designing off-the-beaten-path itineraries, I focus on settings where nature and the soul meet. The Rota Vicentina is a territory where I collaborate as a Member of the Supervisory Board, allowing me to ensure an ethical and rigorous commitment to its preservation. But my curation extends to other magical places, like the mystical Sintra, always shrouded in legend, Arrábida, which balances the crystal blue of the sea with the deep green of the mountains, the wild and pure Gerês, and the legendary, life-changing Caminos de Santiago.

At Hike Time, every detail is planned for your total comfort, but my focus remains on the intangible: the experience, the moment, and your own transformation. I invite you to take the first step on a journey that goes far beyond the distance covered, toward discovering the most authentic parts of Portugal-and yourself.
